“Operational Risk Management Issues
between Theory and Real Life”

Some incidents or accidents cannot be quantified from operational data alone because they haven‘t occured in the past. Still, for some events there is a non zero risk that we would like to quanitfy so we can take the necessary precautions for the future.

One such issue is the transport of undeclared dangerous goods, for example hidden lithium batteries. There is an inherent risk with highly flammable material that endangers the crew as well as the whole operation.

How do we tell it is safe to take any such material on board? Can we take the risk? How do we quantify the probabilities?

Announcement: DLR Uni Summer School 2019 – Braunschweig

TUM students have the opportunity to participate in this year’s DLR_Uni_Summer_School, taking place September 16-20, 2019, in Braunschweig. The students will prepare, conduct and evaluate different flight tests. The theoretical content will be applied in practice during flight tests with the research aircrafts of DLR (Cessna 208B Grand Caravan) and TU Braunschweig (Dornier Do 128-6).

Participation can be recognized as “Praktikum Flugversuchstechnik” (Flight Testing Lab).

See Announcement

Application is open until July 26, 2019. Please contact Moritz Speckmaier with full name, matriculation number and a list of relevant exams you have passed (Introduction to Flight System Dynamics and Flight Control or Flight System Dynamics 1/2 is required).

Guest Seminar: Machine Learning in Optimal Control

The Institute of Flight System Dynamics welcomes Professor Sébastien Gros from Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden) for a guest seminar from November 5th – 9th, 2018 (seminar dates: Mon – Fri, 9-10:30 am, MW 3618).

The topic of his seminar is “Machine Learning in Optimal Control” and should give an introduction to the technique of reinforcement learning (i.e., “adaptive optimal control”) that uses the available measurement data gathered over the operation time to continuously increase the performance of the optimization algorithm and its result.

More information and the contact for questions can be found in the announcement.
